An American tourist has caused a stir on social media after revealing her “culture shock” when visiting an Australian Kmart store for the first time.
Sharing on TikTok, user Kaymie Wuerfel posted a video detailing her thoughts on the popular retail store.

“My first time down the rabbit hole called Kmart!” Kaymie wrote on her TikTok video, adding the hashtag #cultureshock.
In the footage, the American jokes about how difficult it is to leave Kmart without stepping out with a cart full of goodies.
Kaymie notes that shoppers go to Kmart to buy just one thing – leaving their husbands at the door – only to end up picking up dozens of candles, clothes and storage containers.
She also jokes that at the end of the shopping spree, Kmart fans often forget to buy the one item they planned to buy to begin with.
But it was Kmart’s checkouts that left the American shopper scratching their heads.
The TikTok shows her pretending to bring items to the checkout at the front of the store – only to find that Kmart’s cash registers are located in the central area.
“Oh, so I’m going to the middle of the store to pay… OK then,” she said in the video, sounding confused.
The video garnered a big response on TikTok from US and Australian users.
“It’s hilarious how Americans can’t understand why we love Kmart. Our Kmarts are so much better,” one said.
Added another: “Yanks find out Kmart is selling $6 shirts that look good as well as slow cookers for $20.”
Many Australians agreed that it is “weird” that Kmart checkouts are located in the center of the store.
The retail giant moved its registers from the front of its stores to the center in 2017, reports at the time suggesting this was done to minimize theft.
“It’s so stupid how the checkout is in the middle of the store. I don’t know why they changed it and I will never like it,” one said.
Added another: “Stupid place to put records. I hate change.
Wrote a third: “The worst thing Kmart did was put the tills in the middle of the store.”
Added one more: “Ugh. The checkout in the middle of the store. Whyhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?
Said another: “It still confuses me why we pay in the back too!”
