A TikToker from New Zealand raises her eyebrows after sharing the great ‘culture shock’ she faced after moving to America.
The video is from popular user Jazz Thornton, who posts videos under both the names @jazzthornton_ and @notjazzthornton. On the latter account, the New Zealander revealed something strange that she noticed when she temporarily moved to the United States.
Can we preserve the Earth while still retaining the thrill of being human?
Her clip, which has garnered nearly 4 million views, is part of a long-standing TikTok trend in which users share their biggest international culture shocks. In the past, TikTokers has discussed why some fruits have different names in Australia, why Swedes only eat “candy” on Saturdays, and what happens if you order “chips and salsa” in Italy.
In Thornton’s video, which is part of a series, she pointed out a particularly “bizarre” fact about shopping in America: the way price tags fail. really show how much something costs.
Thornton begins by explaining that she recently tried to buy a dress in America and was shocked to find that the listed price was much different from what she ultimately paid.
“It was like $ 10 more,” she says.
The problem? Sales tax. In New Zealand, sales tax is usually included in the price listed, which means what you see is what you pay for. Of course, it’s much more complex in the United States
“And then when you’re in restaurants and the like, tax is added and tips added,” Thornton says of the United States. “It’s like nothing is the normal price. “
It is a common confusion. Many countries treat sales tax the same as New Zealand, where it is included in the price. In the United States, this is not possible because the sales tax differs by state or even county.
However, many Americans were shocked to learn that some countries are doing things differently.
“Wait what? Isn’t that normal?” One TikToker commented.
“Can I just come back to New Zealand with you?” Another joked.
