Good Good Culture Club, Daytrip tops Bon Appétit’s list

San Francisco’s Good Good Culture Club and Oakland’s Daytrip restaurants were among a list of American restaurants recognized Thursday for their creative atmosphere and inventive menus worth ordering.

“We are humbled and proud to be on this list as one of these important restaurants,” Good Good Culture Club wrote on instagram. “All restaurant families work hard, and we’ve all been challenged beyond measure in recent years.”

Bon Appétit highlighted the Good Good Culture Club’s “good good chicken wing”, which is prepared with an adobo glaze and stuffed with garlic rice and is best eaten in the restaurant’s rooftop dining room.

Chef-owner Ravi Kapur, who also owns the Liholiho Yacht Club in SF, opened the Good Good Culture Club in January under a model committed to better paying staff that eliminated tips and offered shorter working hours, as detailed in The story of Eater SF. The restaurant’s Instagram post on Thursday added that “our model now benefits every staff member.”

Bon Appétit named Oakland’s Daytrip Restaurant to its list of the 50 Best New Restaurants for 2022.

Daytrip (which technically opened in October 2021) focused on a mostly fermented menu with plenty of vegetarian and vegan snacks. Plus, the space has a funky 1970s vibe, complete with a disco ball at the entrance. Co-owner Stella Dennig told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2021 that she planned to offer a space similar to a “soft disco drunken dinner”. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently of each other.)

From Daytrip, Bon Appétit named the charred favas with candied sesame brittle risotto as well as the hand-cut pasta as outstanding menu items.

Bon Appétit plans to release its guide to the 10 best new restaurants on September 14, when we’ll see if these two local spots make the cut. To see the complete list of Bon Appétit.
