Emma Watson said coming out in America was a huge culture shock

To say that Emma Watson has traveled a lot would be an understatement. Thanks to Harry Potter franchise, the actor started traveling at the age of 10. Film promotion took her all over the world and she was allowed to visit a bunch of different countries. However, these days Watson seems to be splitting his time between England and the United States. And Watson shared that her love life in the latter country is wildly different than in the former.

For years, Watson didn’t say who she was dating. She shared that she never wanted her boyfriends to feel like they were part of a media circus. She explained that she couldn’t talk about her boyfriend in the press if she wanted people to respect her boundaries. But while Watson may not be willing to give details about her dating life, she has gotten candid about dating in general.

How does the ‘Harry Potter’ actor approach dating?

So how does Watson approach dating? For obvious reasons, the The beauty and the Beast alum can’t just hop on a dating app or go on a blind date. In an interview with GQ UK, Watson said she dates people she met through mutual friends or while at university. The actor attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She also spent a semester at Worcester College, a constituent college of the University of Oxford, England.

“Usually the people I’ve dated are friends of friends or people I’ve been in a class with,” Watson revealed. “Someone I met in circumstances where we are equals, so fame doesn’t come into the situation.”

Interestingly, Watson shared that dating in the United States is very different from dating in her home country of England. On The Ellen Show, she shared that American guys and English guys have very different approaches when it comes to asking her out and dating her.

“Yeah, there’s definitely a couple of differences that I’ve noticed,” Watson explained. “The English are very well put together. They dress really well, and they’re very well mannered. But they are also very discreet. Usually, in any courtesy situation, I’m used to being, first of all, ignored for the first two months of the ritual. And then maybe they will recognize my presence. Then they’ll probably be a little mean to me. And then, maybe we’ll know anything.

Continuing, Watson explained what his dating experience was like in the United States. “Then I come to America, and I remember a few nights at Brown, this guy just going, ‘I like you. You’re awesome. Let’s go on a date. Let’s do it,'” Watson recalled. “I’m like, ‘I’m sorry, what just happened?’ It’s like a huge culture shock for me. They are very open and very direct. But they wear flip flops, and I don’t know if I like that.

Clearly, Watson had drastically different dating experiences depending on where in the world she was. Watson was last rumored to be dating Los Angeles-based businessman Leo Robinton, so it seems that, for now, the American approach has won the actor over.
