Culture Secretary meets top musicians to discuss future of industry post-lockdown

A team of leading UK musicians have been invited to take part in a virtual meeting with Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, on the future of the music industry post-pandemic of coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown.

Violinist Nicola Benedetti, trumpeter Alison Balsom, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and conductor Simon Rattle had a series of conversations with people in the industry to discuss their concerns, which they passed on to Dowden at a meeting organized on June 18, in the short term.

The musicians’ statement calls on the government to support the industry and collaborate with artists, with sufficient funding given to organizations during the limits of social distancing and beyond.

Recent discussions within the arts industries have focused on the limits of mandatory distancing measures and what this will mean for the inevitable loss of revenue for theatres, concert halls and opera houses.

In his statement, Simon Rattle included references to his experiences in European cities post-lockdown, how social distancing measures have been implemented and what the UK could do to follow suit.

The full statement from the musicians can be seen below.
