Fermentation is the power behind many of our favorite foods and drinks, from beer to kimchi. But it is quickly becoming a staple of beauty products.

There’s a boom in bioscience-derived ingredients, sustainably obtained through fermentation, from sugarcane-based silicone alternatives to fermented honey actives for microbiome balance.

Marketers, on the other hand, place fermented products at the center of their message. Indeed, trend forecasting firm WGSN named fermented beauty a “one to watch” for 2022.

“The desire for potent ingredients that last longer is driving interest in kombucha for the skin,” the company wrote in its annual trends report. “Driven by beauty markets K and J, fermentation releases enzymes that break down molecules so they can better penetrate the skin, delivering powerful ingredients into the skin or hair structure.

“The fermentation process also promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria such as lactic, organic and acetic acids, which act as natural preservatives.

“These natural bacteria extend the shelf life of formulas, appealing to both the sustainability-conscious and value-driven consumer.”
